Why every "free Shopify audit" tool gives Indian founders the wrong answer
Type "free Shopify audit" into Google and you'll find 30 tools, almost all of them built for US D2C. They check things like Klaviyo integration, Affirm-style buy-now-pay-later widgets, and Trustpilot embed counts. None of them check:
- Is COD offered, and is the COD policy linked from the PDP? 60% of Indian Tier-2/3 orders are COD.
- Are UPI, GPay, PhonePe logos shown above the fold or in the footer? 70% of mobile checkouts in India use UPI.
- Is GSTIN visible somewhere on the site? A missing GSTIN raises a red flag for B2B/wholesale enquiries and for trust-cautious Tier-1 shoppers.
- Is there a pincode-availability checker on the PDP? Tier-2/3 shoppers check delivery before they add to cart.
- Is WhatsApp chat enabled (FloatChat, Interakt, WATI, Tidio)? Indian shoppers ask questions on WhatsApp 4× more than email.
That gap is the entire reason D2CIQ's free audit exists. We built it on top of our cohort dataset of 1,140 Indian D2C stores, so when your store scores a 62 on Regional Fit, you're being compared against Mamaearth, Plum, Bewakoof, Snitch, Giva, The Whole Truth — not Glossier.
What the audit checks (5 dimensions, 60+ signals)
1. Trust score (0–100)
35 signals across five clusters:
- Credibility: About page substance, founder story, press/celebrity endorsements, specific customer count ("50,000+" not "thousands"), founding year, manufacturing location.
- Social proof: Embedded review widget (Judge.me, Yotpo, Loox, Okendo, Stamped, Reviews.io, Fera, Junip), star-rating density, recent review timestamps, UGC presence, Instagram embed.
- Purchase confidence: Return/refund policy link in footer + PDP, shipping policy, easy-find contact (email, phone, WhatsApp), order tracking promise.
- Product transparency: Ingredients (for beauty/F&B/supplements), material composition (apparel/jewellery), care instructions, sizing chart, made-in label.
- Post-purchase: Loyalty program presence, referral program, support response time mention, FAQ depth.
2. UI/UX score (0–100)
Uses Google CrUX field data (real-user mobile + desktop performance) plus on-page hierarchy checks:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) on mobile — Indian Tier-2 shoppers on 4G with budget Androids.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — janky load = trust loss.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP) — replaced FID in 2024, measures mobile responsiveness.
- Visual hierarchy — single H1, semantic landmarks, focus order, color contrast.
- Mobile-specific: thumb-zone CTA placement, tap target sizing, sticky Add to Cart on PDP.
3. Regional Fit score (0–100) — the one nobody else does
This is the dimension that separates D2CIQ from every other "free audit tool". 12 signals:
- COD offered + policy linked from PDP
- UPI / GPay / PhonePe / BHIM logos shown
- Razorpay or Cashfree or PayU detected (vs Stripe-only, which can't accept Indian rupees from Indian cards)
- GSTIN visible
- Pincode checker on PDP
- WhatsApp chat widget
- Indian phone number format (+91 ...) in footer
- Indian address shown
- Hindi or regional-language toggle
- Festival/season banner currency (Diwali, Holi, Onam, Pongal)
- Free shipping threshold expressed in ₹
- "Made in India" or origin labels
4. SEO score (0–100)
Technical + topical:
- Meta titles + descriptions present, unique per page, < 60 / < 160 chars
- Canonical tags correct
- Sitemap.xml + robots.txt sane
- OpenGraph + Twitter Card tags
- H1 single + semantic outline
- Internal linking density (collection ↔ PDP)
- Indexable PDP count, broken-link check
- Topical authority: blog presence, depth, entity coverage
5. AI Search / GEO score (0–100)
This dimension didn't exist 18 months ago. Now it's table stakes — Indian consumers ask ChatGPT and Perplexity for product recommendations daily. (We wrote a full guide: how AI Search finds D2C stores.) Signals:
- JSON-LD Product schema present (Name, Brand, Description, Price, Currency, Availability)
- FAQPage schema on FAQ pages
- BreadcrumbList schema
- Organization schema with logo, founder, address
- SSR (server-side rendered) or HTML-first content (CSR-only React/Next.js storefronts where the body is empty score zero)
- Named entity coverage in product copy (specific terms AI models tokenize as your brand)
- llms.txt presence (the emerging standard, not yet universal)

How to read your audit result without panicking
The first time founders see five score chips (Trust 42, UI/UX 68, Regional Fit 39, SEO 58, GEO 22), the reaction is usually: "this is bad". Almost always, it isn't — most scores cluster between p25 and p75 of their cohort. We deliberately don't grade on a curve where 80% of stores get 80+ scores; that would be useless. Here's the rubric:
- Score 0–40: Below cohort floor. Real, fixable leak. Top 1–2 findings will name the specific signal missing.
- Score 41–65: Cohort median territory. Some easy wins to push to top-quartile.
- Score 66–84: Top quartile. The remaining findings are nice-to-have polish.
- Score 85+: Top decile. Compete with Mamaearth, Plum, Giva on this dimension.
